Hogwarts Our Way Symphony Handbook
Written by Director Verismo
Preface
This handbook has been written in order to provide symphony members, parents and all other interested wizards, witches and muggles with information concerning the various activities and policies of the symphony program at Hogwarts Our Way. All symphony members and parents are responsible to read this Handbook carefully in order to avoid conflicts with the policies stated. School rules and policies are enforced at all times for any activity sponsored by, or in the name of Hogwarts Our Way. The Director shall have the authority to suspend or amend any band policy at any time necessary in the best interest of the overall symphony program.
Hogwarts Our Way Symphony Objectives
The Hogwarts Our Way Symphony forms an integral part of campus life. It is one of the largest and most active voluntary student organizations and its members form a diverse cultural group. The primary objectives of the symphony program are:
1) Cultural: To foster the continued development of music appreciation and understanding through the study and performance of the best literature available.
2) Educational: To develop interested and discriminating listeners, provide a well rounded musical education, and prepare students for musical activities in and beyond Hogwarts Our Way Symphony.
3) Service: To lend color and atmosphere to certain school events while promoting and enhancing the dignity and reputation of Hogwarts Our Way at all appearances.
4) Citizenship: To develop the ability to function as a responsible member of a group, to enhance the students ability to interact with others in a positive manner, and to develop the ability to function as a responsible member of the community.
5) Recreational: To provide all students with an opportunity for worthy use of leisure time, and emotional outlet, and good social experiences.
Classroom/Rehearsal Rules
1) Students must be in the symphony room at the start of class time. Rehearsal will begin immediately.
2) There are to be NO materials that are not needed for symphony rehearsal at the student’s seat. All a student needs is music, an instrument, and a pencil.
3) All students will receive music. If music is lost, the student will pay 1 galleon to get a new copy.
4) Students must bring a pencil to class every day, and for all rehearsals
5) There is to be no talking during rehearsals, unless given permission by Professor Verismo. If a student has a question, they are to raise their hand and wait to be recognized.
6) To receive credit for daily participation, all students must have all necessary materials, instrument, book, music, sticks, reeds and a pencil.
7) No food or drinks are allowed in the symphony room unless instructed other wise by Professor Verismo.
8) Students should respect the building and the equipment in it. There is absolutely no running, chasing, flying, hitting, spells, or any other inappropriate behavior allowed in the symphony room!
9) Students are not allowed to leave their seats during rehearsal without permission from Professor Verismo!
10) No one is allowed to play the percussion instruments except the percussionists.
/me These rules are designed to provide a safe, open, and quality-learning environment. They are easy to follow if you use common sense and accept responsibility/me
Excused Absence
If a symphony activity must be missed, an excused absence may be obtained only for the following reasons:
1) Extreme personal illness: The student is generally expected to have a doctor’s notice stating the student’s inability to perform.
2) Situations involving extenuating circumstances, situations of a “One Time Only” nature, or circumstances relating to personal family emergencies may be excused at the discretion of Professor Verismo.
3) Students who are actively participating and represented Hogwarts Our Way in an actual competitive activity, field trip, or similar activity may be excused from rehearsal at the discretion of Professor Verismo.
4) In the case of students involved in sports activities: If the student has a game when the band has a rehearsal, the student may be excused from rehearsal. If the sport team is practicing and the band has a performance, the student will be expected at our performance.
5) Dental appointments, non-emergency appointments, and meeting in general WILL NOT BE EXCUSED. Symphony calendars are provided so parents can schedule around symphony events.
6) Any Concerts (rock, pop, classical, etc) are not an excuse to miss band practices or performances.
COPING WITH BRACES
1. When getting braces installed for the first time, it is wise to bring along your mouthpiece. Even though you will probably be sore and unable to play at first, just forming the embouchure will at least alert you and your orthodontist to any obvious problems, such as a sharp wire or bracket edge. In most cases the orthodontist will be able to file down sharp edges. Be sure to check your embouchure after any future adjustments.
2. Orthodontists and music teachers agree that some sort of cushion between the bracework and the lips not only makes the student more comfortable, but also helps to prevent the formation of scar tissue as the lips move across the bracework. Several solutions are available.
3. In the old race between the tortoise and the hare, "slow and steady" won the contest. This is also true when it comes to getting used to playing with braces. As soon as the student can play at all, it is best to start with very easy exercises. Your symphony director can recommend a plan for getting back into shape. Take it easy and be patient!
4. Avoid adjustments one week before a performance!!! When setting up the next appointment with your orthodontist, be sure to check the Schedule of Activities for the Symphony. Fortunately, we do not have a very heavy schedule. Remember also that appointments are made for the convenience of both the orthodontist and the patient. The timing of an adjustment is rarely so critical that it can't be postponed by a few days.
