On the rare occaision that they did catch a real witch or wizard, burning had no effect whatsoever. The witch or wizard would perform a basic Flame-Freezing Charm and then pretend to shriek with pain while enjoying a gentle, tickling sensation. The Hogwarts Four
[glow=orange,2,300]Over on thousand years ago, the four greatest witches and wizards of the age shared a dream, to create a school where young witches and wizards could train to become skilled fully-trained wizards. These four wizards each founded one of the houses of the school that worked together to form Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry They have been refered to as the Hogwarts four. For a number of years this arrangement worked just fine. Each of the founders took a group of students to be in their own house and even though they had different opinons on who should be trained, the house system helped them all work together. However, as the years went by, the differences between Slytherin and Gryffindor became a serious rift. Adventually Slytherin left the school.[/glow]
Godric Gryffindor
Godric Gryffindor believed that anyone that showed the magical ability should be allowed at Hogwarts. The Sorting Hat originally belonged to Gryffindor. His sword with rubies in the handle has also survived and is in possession of Albus Dumbledore. According to The Sorting Hat Gryffindor came from the moors. It is possible that Godric's Hollow is named after Gryffindor. Gryffindor chose students who were loyal and very brave.
Helga Hufflepuff
According to The Sorting Hat, Hufflepuff came from the valley. Her famous wizard card states that she brought people from different walks of life together to help build Hogwarts and was loved for her charming ways Hufflepuff chose everyone.
Rowena Ravenclaw
According to The Sorting Hat, Ravenclaw came from the glen. Her famous wizard card tells us that it's thought that she came up with the ever changing floor plan. She's remembered for her intelligence and creativity. Rowena was dear friends with Helga. She is said to have stated "We will teach those whose intelligence is surest." Ravenclaw chose the smartest.
Salazar Slytherin
Salazar believed that only pure blood witches and wizards should attend Hogwarts. He got into an argument with Godric Gryffindor about this and adventually left the school. There was a legend that Slytherin built a secret chamber inside the school, that only his true heir would be able to open. This chamber, called the Chamber of Secrets contained a monster that would finish his "noble purpose" of killing muggle-born students at Hogwarts. Slytherin was a parseltongue. Some qualites Slytherin prized in his hand picking of his students were, pure blood, resoursefullness, determination and a certain disregard for rules. According to The Sorting Hat Slytherin came from fen.
History of the Broomstick
A flying broomstick is not just a broomstick pressed into service as a mode of transportation. The flying broomstick is a magical item with built in charms. Flying on a broomstick, paticularly one that accelerates as fast as the FIREBOLT, most necessarily involve some form of magical protection field holding the ride to the broom and sheilding agaisnt wind and other forces. Without this, it seems unlikely that anyone could hang on when a FIREBOT accelerates from 0-150 mph in only ten seconds. It also seems likely that flying a broomstick doesn't involve actually sitting on the handle, which would be uncomfortable indeed. As a matter of fact, most illustrations we see in the books show the rider floating a little ways above the handle. The spell which creates the effect is called the CUSHIONING CHARM, invented by Elliot Smethwyk in 1820. Broomsticks are certainly charmed objects. The best ones seem to respond to thoughts.
